Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, often abbreviated RHIT, is a small private college specializing in teaching engineering, mathematics, and science, located in Terre Haute, which is a city in Vigo County (serving as its county seat), in the US state of Indiana, near the state's western border with Illinois, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 60 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.
RHIT was established in 1874, by Chauncey Rose, along with 9 friends, as the Terre Haute School of Industrial Science, having the mission to provide technical training, after encountering difficulties in local engineer availability during construction of his railroads. It is currently ranked as the best in USA, among schools whose highest degree is a bachelor's or a master's degree.
RHIT's athletic teams are known as the Fightin' Engineers and they compete in 22 sports, in NCAA Division III. Their distinctive colors are old rose and white, and their mascot is Rosie the Elephant.
Bernard Vonderschmitt - Co-founder of Xilinx, Abe Silverstein - Aeronautical engineer, NASA center director, and Guggenheim Medal winner, Leroy A. Wilson - former President of AT&T, and Art Nehf - Major League Baseball pitcher are among the noteworthy alumni from RHIT.
